The Applied Spatial Research Agency (ASRA) attends to the relationships through which people and environments shape each other. It situates individual, social and cultural dynamics at the center of spatial practice.
Its mission is to increase the meaning and value of everyday life through progressive refinements to the built environment. ASRA is a hybrid organization, founded on the premise that both commissioned projects and independent inquiry are most valuable when developed in dialogue with each other.
ASRA conducts research in design studies, at the intersection of environment-behavior relations and theories of form. It examines neighborhoods, buildings, and rooms as sets of relations between people and things. Form is the medium through which people and environments interact, and it is in that interaction that meaning and value emerge.
ASRA advises clients on how to improve their environments by helping them understand how those environments work, and in what ways they matter. Attentive observation and analysis yield clear objectives and well-informed decisions. The result is places that feel considered and intentional, that work for people, and that resound with social life.
